Linde 39X. The revolution grows

Hot on the heels of the release of the Linde 39X 3.0t and 3.5t models is the new 394 range which includes 4.0t, 4.5t and 5.0t versions of the highly successful 39X range of IC forklifts.

When the Linde 39X forklift was introduced to the world some 18 months ago, it was viewed as one of the biggest design breakthroughs in forklift technology. The exceptional economy, ergonomics and performance of the Linde 39X was interpreted as a total redefining of lift trucks powered by internal combustion engines.

In general, these larger models are just that – larger versions of the original 39X. Critical components such as the mast, wheels, front axle mounting, counterweight and hydraulic components are physically larger, and the power output of the diesel engine is increased - the 394 is turbo-charged and intercooled.

These larger models will provide users with the significant benefits that have been realized by users of the current 39X models.

Linde claims that users can save up to $29,500 in running costs over a five year period, compared to other leading brands. Using manufacturer’s specifications on a 2.5t diesel forklift, the fuel savings alone equate to $16,000 over 5 years - based on a fuel cost of 88 cents/litre. The non-skid characteristics of the hydrostatic controls, results in using two less sets of tyres and the 1000 hour service intervals means the 39X needs 40 less services over a 5 year period.

In addition to these figures, running costs are further minimised through the elimination of expensive and maintenance-intensive parts such as the mechanical clutch, gearbox and conventional brake.

These new 4t to 5t models have significant performance enhancements over previous models, including improved capacity, quieter operation, reduced emissions, faster cycles times, a 4kW increase in power and extended maintenance intervals.

The progress in ergonomic design of the 394 series is exciting for forklift drivers. The compact nature of the engine pays off in tangible comfort for the operator. The cabin offers clear space for entry and exit without going through any contortions.

The nucleus of the truck’s ergonomic focus is the Linde Load Control (LLC) system of electronic mast function actuation. The two control levers for mast, fork and load movement are integrated in a wide armrest that is adjustable vertically and horizontally, resulting in the levers sitting literally at the operator’s fingertips. The electronic actuation of the hydraulics means that the effort required with either control lever is 85% less than operator effort needed with mechanical levers, while exceeding the load handling precision possible with mechanical levers.

To further improve operator comfort, great attention has been paid to the elimination of vibration. The engines are resiliently mounted to the counterweight, dampening vibration at the source. The mast is mounted directly to the drive axle, ensuring that vibrations from handling of the load are transmitted straight to ground without ever going through the chassis. Most interestingly, the drive axle is resiliently mounted to the chassis, giving a level of ride comfort that must be experienced to be believed.

A new control system – Linde Truck Control (LTC) provides the operator with superb responsiveness and precision in driving and lifting. It also keeps the engine speed at the lowest rpm necessary for each task, assisting fuel efficiency, quiet running and, most importantly, eliminates operator involvement in managing engine speed. LTC actually monitors the driver’s inputs and adjusts engine speed so that sufficient power will be available – the previous model Linde trucks had load-sensing hydraulics on all truck functions, while 39X models have load-predicting hydraulics.

The noise level has been reduced by 5dB(A), which is well over 50% lower than the current model. This actually makes the 39X quieter than some electric lift trucks on the market.

The integrity of the low emission status of the 39X is maintained through its ability to always stay tuned. The electronic engine management systems continuously monitor the state of the engine and automatically adjust parameters to ensure optimum combustion process within the engine. It is not dependent on regular maintenance intervals to ensure low emissions.

Another unique feature of the 394 series is the top-mounted tilt jacks. This design enables greater precision and control of the load, while residual capacities are increased through a wider range of lift heights. The pivot points of the tilt cylinders and mast have resilient, maintenance-free mountings to cushion shocks and vibration.
